Fire Support Base HUSKY was located just outside Xuan Loc in Long
Khanh Province. On the night of 17/18 May 1969 FSB HUSKY was hit
by a combined mortar, rocket, and sapper attack. Parts of the FSB
were overrun and a number of the heavy guns were destroyed or put
out of action - for example, four of C Btry 2/9 Arty's six 105mm
howitzers were unusable, hindering the defense. Although the FSB
held out against the attack, thirteen soldiers and one sailor
were killed and a number of others wounded. The American dead

I received this email today from Jack L. King, Pennsylvania. He and I correspond with each other from time to time. Several years ago he wrote to me and told me he was at Hamburger Hill with our friend and classmate, Allen Culpepper. He spoke highly of Allen and said he was with Allen during much of the terrible fighting that occurred that night and early morning. Of all of the men killed that day, Allen was the only one to receive the DSC, Distinguished Service Cross. Allen finished West Point in 1966. We were all privileged to be a fellow student of his at MHS and we remember him fondly. PFC King has never forgotten the sacrifice of Cpt. Allen Culpepper. Thanks, Tom Carey Ruston, LA 318-513-9400
I have sent 3 previous emails
about Allen, but this one was the first that I received back in
2005 from PFC King. It is about as personal as a statement
could be and all MHS grads should be proud that they knew Allen
Culpepper, MHS 1962. I would have included it with previous emails to
make them more clear, but I had difficulty finding the email
among many others. Tom

I just read your tribute to Cpt. Culpepper
on the Virtual Wall site; and thought I would let you know that I
was one of the men who volunteered to follow him into battle on
5/18/69. He was a very brave man that night that he
gave the ultimate sacrifice for his fellow m e n. He will
forever be a Hero in my heart. I was by his side to the end. JL

This is a narrative from PFC King about FSB Husky, the area around which Captain Culpepper died while bravely leading his men. FSB Husky was just outside of Xuan Loc.
The base camp at Xuan Loc had apprx, 500 men at any one time. On 18 May the birthday of Ho chi Min intell. reports told us of a suspected mass attack on that compound and a promise to fly the North Vietnamese flag in Husky compound for his birthday honors, Well .he never did.;but he was so close to su ceeding; that his men were found within 100 yards of Husky center compound flag pole.Due too the severity of the attack and so few men for the size of the attack 17 men were lost from Husky but many ARVNs were lost helping to defend from there camp adjacent to us that night .I myself saw hundreds of enemy dead outside the compound and on the wall where they breached the perimeter there was hand to hand combat in some areas taking place.A few years ago I was able to read a article that made the front page of the New York times news paper reporting the battle of Xuan Loc and est. a force of 2000 enemy. article was dated May 19 1969.
Military Hall of Fame honors Minden man
Louisiana Military Hall of Fame and Museum inducted 15 service cross recipients at a ceremony in Abbeville recently, including one from Minden. The various branch's service cross awards are second only to the Medal of Honor.
Army Captain Allen Ross Culpepper was awarded the Purple

Received a call today from Minden Newspaper. Writer said Allen Culpepper was inducted in LA Military Hall of Fame last week, in Abbeville. All inductees had been awarded the DSC, 2nd only to the Medal of Honor. In the firefight in which Allen was killed, he was the only one of 13 killed who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. J. L. King was awarded the Silver Star. Writer also told me Allen's brother Arville, retired from Air Force as Lt. Colonel. Also, Allen's Mother, sister, wife and daughter are still living. Captain Culpepper, a brave and honorable man, died May 18, 1969. T. D. Carey, class of 1965
