Early years and education
Hargrove was born in Minden Sanitarium to Hayward Hargrove,
Sr. (1919-1975), and the former Edwina Brister (1923-1983), both natives of
Jackson Parish, he from the parish seat of Jonesboro and she from the community
of Eros. He has a younger sister, Judith Hargrove Ehrhardt (born November 14,
1955), who lives with her family in Kingwood, a master-planned community in
northeast Houston, Texas. The Hargroves attended First Baptist Church in Minden.
The senior Hargrove worked for what became Exxon Corporation in 1971. Mr. and
Mrs. Hargrove are interred in Minden Cemetery.
Sonny attended the then
newly-established E.S. Richardson Elementary School in Minden and graduated
in 1960 from Minden High School. He then enrolled at Northwestern State
University in Natchitoches, from which he obtained his bachelor's degree in 1964. At
Northwestern, he was student body president and was affiliated with Omicron
Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society, and Phi Delta Kappa, a
professional organization for educators. He was listed in "Who's Who Among
Students in American Universities and Colleges."
In 1965, he received his Master's degree from LSU in Baton Rouge. He received
his Doctorate from Ole Miss. in 1969, at the age of twenty-six. He is possibly
the youngest holder
of the terminal academic degree in his field from his alma mater. His three
degrees are in education, university administration, and personnel services.
Ministry
Hargrove was ordained into the Baptist ministry in 1986. In China, he was part of a 13-member team selected to tour portions of the country to evaluate the religious and education structures there. He was the first person to have shared the salvation gospel of Jesus Christ in several provinces since the days prior to Mao Tse-tung's Cultural Revolution.
He has worked with chaplain volunteers in hospitals, nursing homes, and the Mountain Area Hospice in Asheville. He is a volunteer chaplain at the hospice, which cares for dying patients. He is also the chaplain at the Young Men's Christian Association's Blue Ridge Assembly Conference Center in Black Mountain. Hargrove participated in the International Congress on Spiritual Revival in Switzerland. Delegates included religious and educational leaders from the United States, Europe, and Russia.
Hargrove is a former Rotary International ambassador to the United Kingdom, in which capacity he met with Prince Charles Windsor and visited government and legal institutions and colleges and universities. Hargrove remains occupied too as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity, his work with Alzheimer's disease patients, and as hospice chaplain.
Said Hargrove: "I was blessed to have loving parents and to be raised in Minden. I had many opportunities that the Good Lord provided that I am most grateful for. He put me in the right places at the right times. I am thankful for a wonderful family and the blessing to be a chaplain."
