The Gilbert Boys
Tap, Harold, Edna, Huies, and Horace
...............................................................................................................................................
There were 2 children that did not make it past the first year.
Olive Lee Gilbert 1906-1906
George Henry Gilbert 1907-1907
Aunt Kate had the bronzed shoes of George Henry. She gave them to Aunt Nell when she moved into the nursing home.
The rest were John Horace, Lawrence Harold, Arthur Huies, Emily Elizabeth, Helen Edna, Kate, Ysleta, Uncle Buddy, Tap, and Nell.
Of the group, Aunt Elizabeth and Aunt Kate have been the only 2 to make it into their 90s. Ysleta and Buddy are a few years away from that milestone, and Aunt Nell is a long ways from it.
As for Arthur Preston Gilbert, he was born in near Abbeville, Mississippi to George Gilbert and Elizabeth Gordon. George was born in 1848 in Madison County, GA, and died in Arkansas in 1932. Elizabeth Gordon Gilbert was born in Tennessee in December of 1847 and died in Bearden, Arkansas in 1924. George’s parents were William Crawford Gilbert (1820-1892) and Tyletha Hampton (1821-1874). They were both born in Madison Co, GA and moved near Abbeville, MS sometime around 1850 after the census was made. They are both buried at the homestead near Abbeville.
That’s probably more info than you wanted to receive, but that’s a brief history as to where the Gilbert’s came from.
Logging was the industry taken up Arkansas, and is what Arthur Preston continued to do when he moved into Louisiana.
Our goal right now is to find a photograph of George and Elizabeth Gordon. We have a few of George’s sister’s in Mississippi, but have not been able to find one of George and Elizabeth. -m
Respectfully,
Matthew Gilbert

7. Old Photos: I wanted to send you a few pictures of the Gilbert family.
The recent
one was taken in December during our family reunion. The oldest one was
found in a box of Aunt Kate's belongings that Aunt Nell (Gilbert/Harlan)
had. I was going through several old framed photos of the Matthews
family when I came across a small envelope with a negative inside. I
took it and had it developed, and low and behold it was the oldest photo
that I know of that we have of the Gilbert boys. The photo with Grandpa
Gilbert was given to me by Aunt Judy Wingrove.

7.1John Kenneth Gilbert, Arthur Preston Gilbert, Judy Wingrove, and
Gary Gilbert. This was taken probably around 1950/51.

7.2 From left to right are Uncles Harold and Huies Gilbert, and then my
grandpa, Horace "Rusty" Gilbert. This was taken in 1913.

7.3The newer photo left to right: Matthew Gilbert (myself), Aunt Nell
Harlan, Uncle James "Buddy" Gilbert, and Aunt Elizabeth Ambrose. This
was taken in December 2008. Aunt Elizabeth turned 94 last week, and is
still doing well for her age. She doesn't look a bit different than when
I was growing up as a kid.

CORRECTION
I remember Rusty Gilbert as a very nice person and a
heck of a baseball player. Carolyn was one of the loveliest young women
in her affect and demeanor. Very modest, super intelligent and sweet. I
don't know how old that picture is but she looks exactly the same.
