MEMORIES OF JOHN ADCOCK

John Gray Adcock was born August 2, 1939 in Minden, Louisiana to George Alman
and Mattie Lee (LONG) Adcock. He was on of three boys. His older brother was
George Alman Adcock, JR. who died in 1999. His younger brother is Rev. Ray Don
Adcock of Monroe, Louisiana.
John spent all his childhood and youth in Minden, attending elementary and high
school there. He graduated from MHS in 1954 where he was involved in both
football and baseball. Following that, he attended Southwestern Louisiana
Institute (now ULLafayette). He earned his BA degree in 1958, and taught one
year of high school in Jonesboro-Hodge, Louisiana.
On June 6, 1959, John and Dorothy Frances Day, also of Minden (Class of 1957)
were married. In August of that year, John was drafted into the US Army, and
sent to White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico where he served two years.
During that time their first son, Kenneth Gray Adcock was born at WSMR.
Living in Las Cruces, New Mexico, John then returned to teaching at Alameda Jr.
High School in 1961 where he became a top-notch math teacher. He taught there
until 1976 when he became a high school counselor at Las Cruces High School,
having continued his education at New Mexico State University, earning his MA in
Counseling in 1968. He remained there until his retirement from the public
schools in 1988. However, he continued his part time teaching at NMSU, in the
Dona Ana Branch, and at the Education Center at WSMR where he taught from 1969
to 2003.
Dottie also became a teacher starting her degree in Music Education at Louisiana
Tech in 1957 and finishing at New Mexico State in 1963. Their second son Charles
Alfred Adcock was born in 1965. She also taught 27 years in the Las Cruces
Public Schools retiring in 1991.
Both John and Dottie were involved in church activities at FBC in Minden and in
Las Cruces. John served many years as a deacon and Sunday School director;
Dottie has served in the church choir as a choir member, soloist and church
pianist (since 1988).
John passed away on December 27, 2004 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He was buried
in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Las Cruces, New Mexico on December 31, 2003.
John was known as an outstanding educator, a very caring instructor, and
faithful servant of God. He was unassuming, funny, and a very loving grandfather
for his four grandchildren. He is missed.
