JAMES LEE CHESHIRE,
WILLIAM B. COLCLASURE SUCCUMB TO INJURIES.
BILLY JACK
STANFIELD IN SERIOUS CONDITION
Two Minden Youths are dead and another seriously injured
as the result of an accident in which the automobile
they were riding in crashed head-on into a
transport truck trailer obstructing the highway a short
distance west of McIntyre Wednesday night around 9:00
o'clock.
The victims James Lee Cheshire, 16 year-old high school
student, and William Bryan Colclasure, 19, died at the
Minden sanitarium a few hours after being
admitted. Billy Jack Stanfield was reported to be in
serious condition at the time the paper went to press.
The accident occurred on Highway 80, just past McIntyre
around 9:00 o'clock in the evening. According to Dr.
Thomas Richardson, assistant coroner, who
reported to the scene along with state troopers, the
youths were driving west and ran into the truck trailer
of the M. & W. Trailer, which had jackknifed across
the road.
CALCLASURE, William B. Pct.
William B. Callasure, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. B.
Callasure, Minden, graduate of Minden High. Entered
Marines, 1943, trained in San Diego. Served in Amer.
Theater. Discharged in 1944. Killed in Auto. Accident,
1944.
Circumstances
The driver, William D. Knight, 40, South Grand, Monroe,
stated that he started to shift from third gear when
something snapped. His truck rolled back down
the incline and jackknifed across the road. Knight stated
that he was headed east at the time.
The cab of the truck remained on the right side of the road
while the trailer hung out blocking the left side. Knight
said that he got out of the cab to try to
flag traffic and succeeded in stopping one truck, which was
turning around to help move the trailer when the accident
happened. Knight said that he did his
best to flag the car in which the boys were riding but was
forced to run to prevent being struck by the vehicle.
The truck was loaded with gasoline. It was the driver's
first trip. Troopers and the coroner both stated that there
was no evidence of drinking. The automobile,
believed to have been driven by Colclasure, was completely
demolished. Knight is being held for grand jury
investigation. Dr. Richardson stated that the
coroner's investigation is incomplete.
